Sambucol Black Elderberry Immune Support Gummies
Sambucol Black Elderberry Immune Support contains premium European Black Elderberries, for the highest amount of flavonoids. This product also includes Vitamin C and Zinc to further enhance its effects. In terms of ingredients, this includes the same list as Approved Science® Elderberry Gummies. However, this is when it’s important to read labels as the doses found in the Sambucol Gummies are considerably lower. There is only a third of the Elderberry and under a half a dose of both Vitamin C and Zinc.
When reviewing this product, we were pleased to see a price tag that suggests quality. It isn’t the cheapest we found but cheap doesn’t always mean quality. Additionally, we were hopeful that we could find an offer on bulk purchasing which would make this product more affordable. Unfortunately, there are no such discounts available. Even more unfortunate is that there is no clear return policy. They could have definitely improved the kind of guarantee they provide but we realize that a good guarantee usually comes with a manufacturer’s confidence in the results you will experience so that could explain why.
We appreciated the fact that this supplement offers a bit more than a full month’s supply – 80 capsules, which should last 40 days. Spring Valley Adult Elderberry
Spring Valley supplements are the Walmart store brand exclusively sold there. They are extremely affordable which is incredibly appealing, however, they are mired in controversy. Spring Valley supplements were among those that were tested in an infamous study published in the October 2013 issue of BMC Medicine. 44 supplements were analyzed from 12 different supplement manufacturers and the findings were shocking. The vast majority were found to include substitution, contamination or fillers. Walmart’s house brand was found to be one of the worst offenders. Plant DNA was analyzed and found to contain different plant DNA than listed on labels. Not only is this incredibly misleading but has harmful implications for anyone with allergies. We investigated this Elderberry product in order to see if the company has made improvements in recent years.
Unfortunately, 2 years later there was an investigation led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman which uncovered similar findings. The manufacturer with the poorest results was Spring Valley, where only 4% of the supplements that were tested showed DNA from the plants that were listed on the labels! As a result, Walmart changed their labels in order to remove the words ‘third party tested’ that were previously featured there. We were curious to see whether anything had changed in the years since then.
We discovered that the labels list the same ingredients we’ve seen in our previously reviewed Elderberry Gummies. This was promising. We did find that the doses were not as high as they could be. We were also pleased to see that their prices are extremely affordable and that the product is easy to order on a number of websites. However, there is no mention of being tested by a third-party or complying with US Pharmacopeia’s standards. Additionally, there are very few customer reviews and of those, many are negative. As such, we strongly recommend anyone suffering from allergies or taking regular medication to be extremely cautious before taking this supplement.
